In the Zenit report doc referred to above, the Pope also said

I pray that in this way any risk of confusion or bewilderment will be averted

I posted the following on another forum, but will post it here too. A priest friend in Australia has e-mailed me to ask

(a) Is the Pope suggesting that Roman Catholics are less intelligent than others ?

or

(b) Is this a frank admission that the texts are indeed confusing and bewildering (and therefore will need the sensitivity in introducing them which the Pope says is necessary) ?

You see that the latter document talks about publication of the texts as late as Summer 2011. But surely all texts for singing will be available to musicians long before that - and I include ministerial chants and even settings of the Missal antiphons as well as of the Ordinary of the Mass. Whether the new NRSV Lectionary with Grail IV psalter and revised refrains and verses will get their recognitio in time to join in a single upheaval is another matter, but certainly to be desired.

My understanding is that it is intended that musical settings - and getting to sing them! - should be very much part of the process of catechesis and introduction, though how this will work in practice at diocesan and parish level is up to... the dioceses and parishes...
