Sanctuary Lamp

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Sanctuary Lamp

Post by docmattc »

In various parish newsletters I've seen phrases like "This week the sancuary lamp is burning in memory of..." Do a google search of:
sanctuary lamp burning memory
and you'll see how common this is, but is it really appropriate? I can't say I'm comfortable with the concept. The sanctuary lamp "is alight to indicate and honour the presence of Christ". (GIRM 316) so can it really have this dual purpose?

Is it just a way of getting it paid for? This week's sanctuary lamp is sponsored by...

I think there's a grain of truth in that statement. Sigh.

I know of a parish where "Our Lady's lamp was lit this week in memory of..."

At least that's something that doesn't HAVE to be done so isn't dual purpose... and is therefore as legitimate as taking money for a mass intention, which I suppose you could also call a form of sponsorship.

"This weekend's liturgy was brought to you by the letters Alpha and Omega, and the number 3."

Me too - and in this case, a peculiarly Polish practice.
