Salvete flores (Haydn)

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Salvete flores (Haydn)

Post by gwyn »

Hello everyone.

Another hopeful plea follows.

I wonder can anyone point me to a copy of Haydn's Salvete flores? I've Googled myself silly (they can't touch you for it) but to no avail.

Thanks.

I can't find a Haydn setting mentioned anywhere - sorry.

'Salvete flores'? At first I thought we had strayed into hippy-land - "Hello flowers! Hello trees! etc etc" - but it's 'Salvete flores martyrum'.

This page is enlightening, and the translation rather quaint: http://poor-hymnal.blogspot.com/2007/12 ... il-ye.html

I've never heard it, or even of it, but what you are looking for, Gwyn, is a hymn by Michael Haydn. In d major, catalogue MH307. Now try to find a copy of it!

A Google search for Michael Haydn Salvete flores turns up a number of references to sheet music, recordings and concerts, the first few of which even include a Salvete Flores Mass.

Blackwell's music shop in Oxford unearthed a TTB copy. My mission should I chose to accept it is to render a SATB arrangement - odds against for The Feast of The Holy Innocents 2010.

Thanks again everyone.
