Eeee! Th' laffs we do 'av'.

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Eeee! Th' laffs we do 'av'.

Post by gwyn »

Domine, lux amoris tuae fulget,
fulgens in medias tenebras;
Jesu, Lux Mundi, nobis adfulge,
libera nos per veritatem quam nunc nobis adfers.
Adfulge mihi, adfulge.
Fulge, Jesu, fulge. Hanc terram gloria Patris imple.
Arde, Spiritus, arde. Corda nostra accende.
Flue, Flumen, flue gratia et misericordia gentes inunda.
Domine, emitte verbum tuum et fiat lux.

2 Domine, veni ex tenebris in conspectum
numinosum tuumet in lucem tuam.
Per sanguinem licet mihi ut splendorem tuum intrem.
Me perscrutare, me tempta, tenebras meas totas consume.
Adfulge mihi, adfulge.
Fulge, Jesu, fulge. &c..

2 Sicut splendorem regalem tuum contemplamur,
sic vultus nostri exhibeant imaginem tuam,
gloriam gloria mutantes,
vitae nostrae acta tua, hic reddita, narrent.
Adfulge mihi, adfulge.
Fulge, Jesu, fulge. &c..

It doesn't fit the tune very easily, does it?

Apart from that, a good effort.

Also, needless to say, translating any texts into Latin automatically corrects any theological shortcomings in the original.

May we now look forward to versions of As I kneel before you, If I were a butterfly, etc?

Indeed. But sadly not on my part, I haven't the capacity.

btw: Does this mean that it can now be included in Traditional Masses?

Priceless! But does anyone remember the long-lost but recently discovered antiphon:

"Senex filius imperator mundi fundum habebat" ?

(hint: ther name Donald apparently means "world ruler".)

I have a similar one on CD:
Ecce Macdonaldus Senex, Qui fundum habet. E-I-E-I-O (This is clearly an ancient monastic typographical error from Euouae)
Et in hoc fundo nunnullas boves domesticas habet.

Cum moo moo hic
cum moo moo ibi
ubique una moo moo.

Brilliant! I love the moo moo stuff. What CD?

The funny (or sad) thing is that I wrote a spoof article about this for the April 1st edition of our diocesan newspaper a few years ago, saying that it had been disovered in Bavaria or somewhere, and wrote a pseudo plainchant setting of it. which was printed in the paper with the article. It seems that one priest saw it and was convinced of its genuineness and gave it to his choirmaster who taught it and had it sung at communion. But God has a sense of humour (or else he wouldn't have created musicians).

Its called Grunt, by Sandra Boynton.* The whole CD is chant sung by the animals on a farm. Its not exclusively chant however, the introduction points out that the chickens sing in 3 part harmony. "It is most likely this phenomenon" it says, "that led Julius Caesar to observe: Omnes Gallinae in partes tres divisae sunt. (all chickens are divided into three parts)"

Last Christmas I accidentally put my translation machine into reverse, with the following result.

Olim naso rubefactus
Cuidam erat cervulo,
Quem per noctem si vidisses
Diceris candescere.

Cervi videntes reliqui
Illudebant crudele.
Cervulus dimittebatur
ludis comitantium.

Nubila quaesivit nocte
Ante Natalicia
Senex nasum ut rubentem
Duceret curriculum.

Cervi omnes acclamantes
Diligebant cervulum:
'Propter nasum rubefactum
Notus sis in saecula.'

The usual modern tune for this carol must be replaced by a tune of 87.87.

But perilously close to "And i-o-i-o-i-o by priest and people sungen" -
