psalm refrains

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

psalm refrains

Post by Psalm Project »

Can someone clarify please...
If a church is using grail psalms each Sunday (which most do, I assume) and they choose to print a service sheet, are they permitted to legally reproduce the words of the REFRAIN? (nothing to do with music setting at this point)
I am aware that Grail psalms are copyright but someone in an earlier post mentioned something about the refrain component being ICEL?
Something in the back of my head is nagging me about this.

The responses to the responsorial psalms are taken either (i) from the psalm texts, in which case The Grail England has copyright, or (ii) from other parts of scripture, in which case they are from the Jerusalem Bible and Darton, Longman and Todd ('DLT') has the copyright.

The Grail Psalm texts are covered by the Calamus Licence scheme. DLT will allow up to 500 words to be printed in parish music booklets.

The Grail requires "From the Psalms - A New Translation (c) The Grail (England) published by Harper Collins" as the acknowledgment; DLT requires "From the Jerusalem Bible (c) 1966 Darton Longman & Todd Ltd and doubleday and Company Ltd."

As Keitha said.

You'll only be using ICEL responses if you live in the USA or Australia.

Just to follow up. I have found my notes (!) and The Grail is happy for psalm responses to be printed in parish mass sheets/booklets providing the above acknowledgment is printed.

The Grail normally need 1963 to be printed alongside the copyright symbol. (Until Grail IV appears, that is.)

Sorry - my duff typing! SC is dead right - but I doubt if the Grail will hang you for it!
