ALL the puddings were fantastic - and toasted teacakes for breakfast, with apricot jam, was almost as inspiring as the keynote talks. Echoing Oops' thanks to the organisers.

Re: Better and Worse Aspects of the Reform
It seems to me that there's never been sufficient teaching for people who 'compose' the Prayers of Intercession. I'm sure everyone who does this in our parish has the best of intentions, but most of them simply haven't a clue, and when there is a contribution from the two or three who actually do ...

Re: Triduum 2011 - Hope all goes well!
Am I odd in wondering why anyone receives Holy Communion on Good Friday? It always feels wrong.
BTW talking about howlers, at our Holy Thursday evening Mass the strongest voice in my choir sang a Memorial Acclamation from a different Eucharistic setting to the one I was playing (I was playing the ...

Re: Managing a Liturgical Procession
We always process to 'All glory, laud and honour' and no one seems to have any trouble with it But then, people up here in the frozen north don't have a problem with 'Give me joy in my heart' either, and it is usually on the wish list for two out of three wedding couples (not to process to, of ...

Re: Responsorial Psalm - who sings?
Off-post, but does the banning PP have a flourishing congregation?
On-post, I have several teenage cantors who are happy to sing the RP with the knowledge that the choir are seated behind them (at the other side of the sanctuary from the ambo) who would be too scared to stand at the ambo and sing ...

Re: The New Texts: A Seminar for Composers
Am I naive in thinking that all around the country there are churches (not exactly) full of people who don't give a toss (pardon my french) about what happens? The vast majority of Catholics in this country really couldn't care less about the new translations or whether the settings that they are ...

Re: Easter Vigil 2011 - when to start?
What is one to do when the PP thinks that because the parish church is surrounded by trees it will be dark enough to hold the Easter Vigil at 7.30 - and isn't prepared to be at all flexible about it?

Re: Polyphonic Sanctus
" so long as the people are not completely excluded from taking part in the singing" seems quite clear. If the choir sings the Sanctus from a Byrd Mass the people are surely excluded, or am I missing something? Or, since it is the Cathedral (and the Cathedral Choir was absolutely splendid imho), do ...

Ecumenical Evening Prayer
I need some assistance, friends. The Northumbria Area committee of the Royal School of Church Music has decided to hold its annual Festival in the RC Cathedral early in October this year (that is, assuming that the current programme of restoration is completed in time!), and to base the form of the ...

Re: Easter Vigil Timing
So Matt says 'At Christmas, midnight Mass is at midnight.'
Well, not in my parish it isn't. The last time we had Christmas Midnight Mass at midnight we got invaded by drunks who set off the fire extinguishers. I'm afraid The First Mass of Christmas takes place at 6.30 in the wild lands south of the ...

Re: Advice needed...
Surely the whole point is that people should be 'fed' by what they are offered at the Mass, both in terms of the Liturgy and the music; if the children can't understand the readings they aren't going to bother to try to digest them.
I wonder whether the people who make pronouncements such as ...

Re: CRB, ISA, Vetting and Barring and all that.
I've just had to send a heap of documents off to the Royal School of Church Music in Salisbury (I'm on the Northumbria Area committee and have responsibility for organising chorister award examinations) because for them my CRB clearance had expired. While I'd be all in favour of the checks if they ...
