Attende Domini

Can anyone provide details of the authorship/history of the Lent Prose? Is it Gregorian Chant?

Thanks.

Re: St Barnabas - June 11

It is not only St Barnabas that suffers from the vagaries of the Liturgical Calendar.

The mind boggles that St Bridget is accorded a Feast while Mary Magdlene (who was was the first to encounter Our Lord after the Resurrection and who features in the Gospel) is only accorded a Memoria !!

St Barnabas - June 11

Does anyone know why this is a memoria rather than a feast in the RC Calendar?

Re: Relative importance of feasts

Indeed, and the day of Pentecost marks the end of the Easter feast; hence no octave !

Re: Relative importance of feasts

I think that Pentecost can no longer be regarded as being equal to Christmas and Easter. Both the latter have octaves; Pentecost does not. Walk into Westminster Cathedral on May 12 and you will see that Green vestments have returned.

Re: Cringe-making lines in hymns

The section of the English Hymnal entitled 'For Mission Services' is a rich seam of cringemaking hymns. What was RVW thinking off? This is my fav: Ho, my comrades! see the signal waving in the sky! Reinforcements now appearing, victory is nigh. Refrain: "Hold the fort, for I am coming," Jesus ...

Re: Cringe-making lines in hymns

Slightly off topic but it is interesting to consider hymns that, during their life, have lost some of their verses along the way. 'O for a thousand tongues to sing' was written with 18 verses including these two: Harlots and publicans and thieves In holy triumph join! Saved is the sinner that ...

Re: James MacMillan at Chrism Mass

The Westminster Gloria took a lot of sitting through. The Chrism Mass is an ideal occassion for a setting that can be sung by the whole gathering. If not the Missa de Angelis setting, how about the New People's Mass by Dom Gregory Murray? Sounds like Clifton got it right; they know how to use ...

Re: Cringe-making lines in hymns

In the long history of hymnody, Emily Elliot's 'Thou didst leave thy throne' is, in my view, a particular low point. I challenge anyone to sing this verse with a straight face: The foxes found rest, and the birds their nest in the shade of the forest tree; but thy couch was the sod, O thou Son of ...

Re: Evening of Feb 2: Presentation or Sunday?

Lent next occurs as early as Feb 6 in 2160. It seems a muddle to have cribs still in place until Feb 2. Especially after events that ocurred in the time of Christ's adult life such as his Baptism and his first miracle at Cana have been celebrated in the liturgy. Maybe there is much to be said for ...

Re: Evening of Feb 2: Presentation or Sunday?

And I think that the Cathedral got it right ! Interesting divergence between RC and Anglican liturgies here. It seems to be soleminity in the Anglican church and white frontals/vestments continue from Dec 25 to Feb 2.

Interesting comment on the Solemn Salve Regina. When I first heard it sung, I thought 'This is grim' but the more you hear it the more it gets under the skin. I am not sure who was organist at the All Saints Vespers but they improvised a decent toccatta on the solemn theme. Another interesting ...

Deans of Anglican Cathedrals tend to include the name of the town in their title without the suffix 'cathedral'. This no doubt harks back to a time when religion played a more prominent part in the public life of our cities than it does these days. Mark Langham retains the title of Administrator to ...

The Baptism was observed yesterday, the 8th at Westminster Cathedral. Of course, had the Bishops not made the unfortunate and ill advised decision abt the HDOOs the Epiphany should have been celebrated on the 6th and the Baptism on Sunday 7th. Another query. Is the Feast of the naming of Jesus a ...

Sundays In Ordinary Time

Can anyone help me? I notice from the St Paul's Missal that the Sunday before Lent is the 7th Sunday in OT and the Sunday after Trinity Sunday is the 10th Sunday in OT. Where have the 8th and 9th Sundays in OT gone? Or is this just a device to ensure that the Sunday before Christ the King is the ...
