SSG 90th Anniversary
Next year will be the 90th anniversary of the Society of St Gregory. The Trustees are working on commemorating this event in a number of ways, including preparing a booklet outlining the history of the Society. I'm currently working through past editions of 'Music and Liturgy' along with other ...

Re: Summer School 2015
Hi MaryR,
We have four workshops for the morning sessions which will run as three part workshops over the Summer School week. This should allow participants to get explore the topic in greater depth, but should still be of interest to those attending for just one session. Morning workshops will be ...

Re: Liturgy Office - unjust prejudice?
I think some people are reading far too much into these video clips...
My understanding is that they were intended as a help for people - ie. show the possibilities of using the new texts with sung settings or unsung. It wasn't meant to be prescriptive and shouldn't be read that way - just that ...

Re: Liturgy Office - unjust prejudice?
Speaking as one of the 'congregation' from this video, I understand that the purpose of this video was to demonstrate good liturgical practice and the possibilities of simple sung settings for the average congregation - hence a simple unaccompanied Gloria. The setting used was a simple one that ...

Re: First Mass in new translation: so how was it?
Celebrated the first Mass of the School year yesterday, using the revised translation for the first time. Spent the last week or so talking to each class in the school about the changes - although a small school we cover an age range of 3 year to 18 years and a mix of Catholic, other Christian and ...

Re: John Ainslie in The Tablet
Returning to John's letter... I think he made an excellent point in saying that while there are a number of opportunities for the formation of musicians via Diocesan organisations and the SSG, they only attract those who are aware of their need for training. The question of how to encourage ...

Re: Papal Visit
In case anyone hasn't seen this, the BBC website has a very good 'gigapan' image (no, I'd never heard of this before either) of Cofton Park. You can zoom in and play 'Spot the SSG member'!

Re: Forum Members singing at Cofton Park
Won't be at Cofton Park but will be watching - I'm sure all will go well. I had the privilege of being part of the 'invisible' choir singing for the Pope inside St Mary's College Chapel yesterday morning. Wonderful experience! Enjoy tomorrow

We do that too - not sure how many schools take the time to use it, but the opportunity is offered at least.

Lots of useful comments...
the bottom line, surely, should be that the children get something out of the service
I agree - that has always been a priority. This Mass is very often the first time the children have visited their cathedral, it should be an occasion to remember and (I hope) build ...

Re: Advice needed...
Thanks, Gwyn, that was a useful starting point.
The occasion is the Annual Children's Mass for our Diocesan Children's Society. I don't think it's really an issue of traditional vs anything else. I have a pretty good idea of how to keep the balance between the expectations of the cathedral and the ...

I'm looking for some wise advice - that I know I can get from this forum...
I'm working on planning a Children's Mass to take place in the Cathedral. It's something I've been involved in for many years so I do have a fair idea of what I'm doing - at least, the people responsible keep asking for my ...

Re: Bloopers and Typos
Browsing through the catalogue of a well known Church Suppliers, sourcing items for our new school chapel, I came across a statue of "St Pancreas" - patron saint of alcoholics, no doubt!

Re: Jesus wants me for a sunbeam
Drifting back on to religious objects of questionable taste... the Ship of Fools website has a section called 'Gadgets for God'. How about the knitted Last Supper...

No - even these couldn't induce me to learn to knit!
