Re: The Holy Year of Mercy - are we doing anything?

Indeed, Q: I will be submitting an account of the meeting (including this discussion) for inclusion in the next issue of Music and Liturgy (early 2016). That'll be well into the "year", Alan - any chance of a preview of the relvant part of the account on the forum here? Q Yes, I'll post a draft on ...

Re: The Holy Year of Mercy - are we doing anything?

...Incidentally, congratulations to Paul Inwood whose hymn setting has been chosen as the official anthem (if that's the right word) and to the Composers' Forum for planning to discuss its use. I hope you'll be sharing your ideas with us all. Q Indeed, Q: I will be submitting an account of the ...

Re: Composers group meeting in London on 19th Sept?

Keith is correct, but I have now managed to find a venue for 10 October at St Joseph's Church, Bunhill Row, London. Later today I will send an email to the Composers' Forum mailing list, giving full details. Anyone is welcome to be on this mailing list and to attend our meetings: just email me at ...

Re: Traditional or Contemporary?

... I do feel slightly frustrated with what I am currently gaining from the SSG, although not as frustrated as the rest of the SSG are perhaps currently feeling with me! I suggest you have a conversation with your SSG regional rep about your first point; as to your second, well, I was a member for ...

SSG Composers' Forum: email address

Now would be a good time to think about submitting pieces for consideration at the meeting on 14 September. All Composers' Forum members should have received full information about this meeting some time ago; if not, or if you'd like to join the Forum, please email me at alanpsmith AT mac.com ...

Re: Psalm for the feast of the Transfiguration

JW, I have just PMd one of my settings to you, along with this note: Here's one of mine, based on my festal tone setting of Psalm 66 in Psalm Songs volume 2, page78. I have added verse 8 of the psalm to avoid the very awkward three-line stanza at the end. My congregation doesn't have a problem with ...

Very kind - but, alas, not me but my more prolific namesake. I have taken to putting 'Alan P Smith' in the copyright line.

Re: New Pope

I'm sure you're right, Dunstan.

I noticed that Pope Francis didn't sing anything this evening. This was probably more to do with him having only one lung, but I thought it actually contributed to the impressive simplicity of his first public appearance.

Re: A year on, what are we singing?

Decani have now published a separate edition of my Pershore Mass which, I am happy to say, corrects the typesetting errors that crept into the Laudate Supplement and the revised edition of Laudate. I expect it will take a while for the Decani website to catch up, but the copies are available now ...

Re: Hymnbook recommendations?

I have bought copies of the new edition of Laudate (though we have no plans to update the congregational copies). In many ways it is a handsome and useful production, and it would still be my first choice. However, by no means all of the first edition's typos have been eliminated, nor is all of the ...

Re: Composers Group

As an across-the-water friend of SSG, the feasibility of myself and probably many others attending the Composers' Forum meetings is very unlikely. Would there be any way the SSG could expand the Composers' Forum digitally? Submission of scores (anonymously, perhaps, on the website) for feedback etc ...

Re: A year on, what are we singing?

I agree too. My first setting of the new texts - the Pershore Mass - was not as varied as it might have been in its use of thematic material, and a mix and match approach would be both understandable and effective. (In fact, while the new Laudate prints the entire setting, the new Celebration for ...
